Scottish University

We work alongside one of the largest universities in Scotland with over 36,000 students . It is the 6th oldest University in the English-speaking world, having been established in 1582. With students coming from all over the world, it is vital that the University provides the duty of care necessary for all their students and staff to learn in a safe environment.

Project Scope

The focus of this project was that they wanted to upgrade their existing systems to something more reliable due to an equipment failure and their current equipment had gradually become obsolete.

When working under a strict budget they wanted to create an innovative solution to incorporate existing infrastructure and hardware, therefore trying to keep costs low whilst still creating a state-of-the-art security system solution.

First priority was to update their CCTV . Pointer used Milestone solutions with Axis encoders. Along with this we replaced some of the existing analogue cameras with IP cameras, utilizing Veracity Ethernet Co-ax Converters. This provides clearer, more reliable images which can be encrypted for added security.

Another solution that we were able to use here was Multi-Sensor cameras. This is a camera with One IP address, One cable but four separate, independent images. Thus, increasing coverage with minimal infrastructure cost. This solution was a perfect match for this environment, allowing more camera angles for less cost.

We combined these systems to one secure VLAN over the university to provide a stable and secure environment. This connected all the security features together in a safe network that can only be access by the allowed people to protect and monitor the University on a day to day basis.

Overall, the main goals were achieved, and we were able to keep costs minimal while providing innovative solutions to the issues that they were experiencing. Work with the university is ongoing, including regular updates and maintenance as well as continuing to innovate with ways to improve their security without adding unnecessary costs.
