Learning and Development in Action

We have had a number of things happening over the past few weeks that have allowed Pointer to showcase our emphasis on Learning and Development.

Over the past month our Learning and Development Officer, David Buntain, has been going out to schools to talk to students about what Pointer has to offer them for future careers and apprenticeship schemes.

His first stop was Larbert High School on the 7th of February. The high school were running an event with their S1 students to teach them about the importance of STEM careers. David set up practical tasks with the students to get them engaged in some of the things they can experience when they start an apprenticeship with Pointer. He taught the students to do CAT 5 cable ends as well as how to get cameras online on a DVR and then he allowed them to try for themselves.

Following this, on the 14th of February, David went to Castlehead High School for a careers event. He set up a stand alongside other companies to show them what Pointer has to offer for future careers. This also allowed for a relaxed environment to enable students to approach him with career questions.

This allowed a great opportunity for Pointer to provide students with practical experience and advice so that they can make the right career choices for themselves as well as be able to see Pointer as a possible candidate for a career in the future.

Another great example of the Pointer team putting Learning and Development into practice is Susan Mcleay’s visit to St Rochs school in Glasgow to do mock interviews with the students. Susan Mcleay is our HR manager based in the Pointer Security Glasgow office. This visit was to help to give the students real world experience to help to prepare them for the future. It allowed them to practice interview techniques as well as an opportunity to ask questions and learn from this experience.

Susan had this to say about her experience at St Rochs;

‘I found the morning enlightening as all candidates knew which career path they wanted to follow and being able to provide positive feedback hopefully will help them when they attend their first interviews.’

Pointer is extremely proud of our Learning and Development centre and we have a strong emphasis on continuous development. This is just a few examples of the great work that our team members are doing.
